He hailed from the Sacad Muse sub-clan of Isaaq. Like former emir Moktar Ali Zubeyr (Abdi "Godane"), Al-Afghani hailed from Somalia's North-Western separatist region of Somaliland and belonged to Somaliland's Northern Isaaq clan.
